Tacoma Bolt Pattern and Wheel Compatibility
Short answer
Every 6-lug Toyota Tacoma - 1st through 4th generation - uses a 6x139.7 mm (6x5.5 in) bolt pattern. What changed for 2024 is the hub: 4th-gen trucks have a 95.1 mm bore and M14x1.5 studs, versus 106.1 mm and M12x1.5 on 3rd-gen and older. So older wheels need a hub ring and M14 lug nuts to fit a 4th gen.
What is the Tacoma bolt pattern?
Every 6-lug Toyota Tacoma from 1995.5 to today uses a 6x139.7 mm bolt pattern, also written 6x5.5 inches. That means six lugs on a bolt circle 139.7 mm in diameter. It has never changed across the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations, and it is one of the most common truck patterns Toyota uses, so wheel selection is wide. The bolt pattern alone, however, does not decide whether a wheel bolts up cleanly - hub bore and stud size matter just as much, and those did change for 2024.
The 5-lug exception
Early 2WD, non-PreRunner Tacomas came with a 5x114.3 mm pattern - a completely different setup. The 1995.5-2004 5-lug trucks use a 67.1 mm hub bore, while later 2WD 5-lug trucks (roughly 2005-2015) dropped to a smaller 60.1 mm bore. Every 4x4 and every PreRunner is 6-lug. If you have a 2WD base truck, measure before you shop.

Here is the full spec by generation. The 6x139.7 pattern is constant, but note the 4th-gen change: Toyota shrank the hub bore from 106.1 mm to 95.1 mm and moved from M12x1.5 to larger M14x1.5 wheel studs. That single change is what breaks straight wheel swaps between 3rd-gen and 4th-gen trucks.

Hub-centric vs lug-centric: why the hub bore matters
A wheel can be centered on the vehicle two ways. Hub-centric means the wheel sits on the raised hub at the center of the axle, and the hub carries the wheel's weight and centers it precisely. Lug-centric means the lug nuts alone center the wheel as you snug them down. Toyota's factory wheels are hub-centric: the wheel's center bore is machined to match the hub, so the wheel drops on square every time.
This is why hub bore is a real fitment number and not just trivia. If a wheel's center bore is larger than the hub - for example, an aftermarket wheel with a generic 110 mm or 108 mm bore on a 106.1 mm hub - the wheel is no longer hub-centric and relies on hub-centric rings (plastic or metal spacer rings) to fill the gap and re-center it. If the wheel's bore is smaller than the hub, it simply will not seat, and no amount of torque will make it fit.
Use hub rings on any oversized-bore wheel
If your aftermarket wheels have a larger center bore than your hub (very common), buy hub-centric rings sized hub-to-wheel (for example 106.1 mm to 110 mm). They eliminate steering-wheel vibration and let the hub, not the lugs, carry the load. Torque lug nuts in a star pattern to spec and re-check after 50-100 miles.
Why won't 3rd-gen wheels just bolt onto a 4th-gen Tacoma?
The bolt pattern is identical, so at first glance a 3rd-gen (or 4Runner) wheel looks like a drop-on for a 4th gen. Two things get in the way. First, the 4th-gen hub bore is only 95.1 mm, while older Tacoma/4Runner wheels are machined for a 106.1 mm hub - so the older wheel's bore is now much larger than the hub, and the wheel is no longer hub-centric without a ring. Second, and more important, the 4th gen uses larger M14x1.5 studs, but the older wheels have lug holes drilled for smaller M12 studs and standard-shank lug nuts.
The fix is a known combination: a 95.1 mm hub-centric ring to re-center each older wheel on the smaller 4th-gen hub, plus narrow-shank M14x1.5 lug nuts designed to pass through the smaller M12-sized lug holes and still thread onto the bigger studs. With those two parts, many owners run 3rd-gen and current 4Runner wheels on a 4th gen. Confirm your specific wheel's lug-seat and hole diameter first, and always torque to spec.
The reverse does not work
You cannot put 4th-gen wheels on a 3rd-gen (or older) Tacoma or 4Runner. The 4th-gen wheel's 95.1 mm center bore is smaller than the older 106.1 mm hub, so the wheel physically will not seat on the hub. There is no ring or lug nut that fixes a too-small bore.

The 4th-gen Tacoma (2024+) shares its 95.1 mm bore / M14 setup with Toyota's newer TNGA-F trucks rather than the older group. If you are cross-shopping wheels from a current-platform Tundra, Land Cruiser, or the 2025+ 4Runner, verify the exact hub bore and stud thread before buying - do not assume a matching bolt pattern means a clean fit.
Does the bolt pattern limit spacers, adapters, and wheels?
Spacers and adapters are different tools, and the difference matters. A wheel spacer keeps the same 6x139.7 pattern and just pushes the wheel outward by a fixed amount (commonly 1 to 1.5 inches) to clear big brakes, correct backspacing, or widen stance - hub-centric spacers are strongly preferred. An adapter changes the bolt pattern, letting you run, say, a 6x135 or 5x150 wheel on a 6x139.7 hub. Neither changes what the truck itself accepts; they just re-locate or re-pattern the mounting face.
- Wheel spacer - same 6x139.7 pattern, pushes wheels out; use hub-centric, buy the right stud thread (M12 for older, M14 for 4th gen).
- Wheel adapter - converts to a different bolt pattern; adds stack height and a second set of lug nuts.

Because bolt pattern is only step one, always finish the job with offset. Stock Tacoma offset is high and positive (roughly +25 to +30 mm on 3rd gen, +55 to +60 mm on many 4th-gen trims), which tucks the tire in. A wheel that bolts up perfectly can still poke past the fender or rub the liner if its offset is far from stock, so confirm offset and backspacing before you order.
