Do You Need to Regear a Tacoma for Bigger Tires?

Short answer

You do not have to regear a Tacoma for 33s - they run on stock gearing, just sluggishly, with more downshifting and worse mpg. For 33s, 4.88 is the popular do-it-right ratio (4.56 for a street bias); 35s and heavy builds want 5.29. Always regear the front and rear together. Budget about $2,500 to $4,000 installed.

Do you actually need to regear a Tacoma for bigger tires?

It depends on the tire size, your transmission, and how the truck feels to you. A bigger tire is taller and heavier, which effectively raises your gearing (makes it numerically lower) and forces the engine to work harder to turn it. On 33s, most Tacomas are perfectly drivable on stock gears - they are just noticeably sluggish off the line, the automatic hunts between gears on grades, and fuel economy drops. On 35s the loss of low-end torque is large enough that a regear stops being optional for most people.

  • Stock-size or near-stock tires (about 31 to 32 inches): no regear needed.
  • 33s on an automatic: livable but sluggish; a regear is a strong quality-of-life upgrade, not a hard requirement.
  • 33s on the 3rd-gen 6-speed manual (4.30 stock): closer to acceptable, because the manual already runs a shorter ratio.
  • 35s or a heavy overland/towing build: a regear is effectively required to restore usable torque and stop the transmission from lugging.

Generation matters for the starting point

3rd-gen V6 autos leave the factory around 3.909, the 3rd-gen manual at 4.30, and the 4th-gen 8-speed auto at roughly 3.583. The taller 4th-gen ratio plus its extra transmission gears mask some of a big tire's effect, but the underlying tradeoff is the same.

The rule of thumb: go up roughly one ratio step for 33s and two for 35s, then lean numerically higher if you tow, carry weight, or wheel a lot, and numerically lower if the truck lives on the highway. These figures are referenced to the 3rd-gen V6 automatic's 3.909 starting point; a 4th-gen owner should shift the recommendation to account for the taller 3.583 stock ratio and confirm what ring-and-pinion sets are actually available for that axle.

4.88 does more than restore stock

On 33s, 4.88 makes the truck behave like it has an even shorter ratio than stock on the original tires (roughly a 4.7 feel). That is intentional - it hands back the low-end torque the heavier tire ate, plus a little extra to move the added rotating weight.

How much does a bigger tire drop your effective gearing?

You can estimate the hit with one line of math. Effective gearing = stock ratio x (old tire diameter / new tire diameter). Going from a 31.6-inch tire to a 32.7-inch 33 on a 3.909 truck gives 3.909 x (31.6 / 32.7) = about 3.78 - roughly a 3.4 percent drop, so the truck now drives as if it were geared at 3.78 instead of 3.909. On 35s (about 34.4 inches) the effective ratio falls to about 3.60, which is why 35s feel so much worse than 33s on stock gears.

That lower effective ratio shows up as lower engine RPM at a given road speed, which pushes the engine out of the part of its torque curve it likes. The table below computes cruise RPM at 65 mph in top gear (6th, 0.58) for a 3rd-gen V6 automatic. Numbers are nominal and vary with the exact tire, gear selection, and grade - the point is the before-and-after, not the exact tach reading.

Notice that regearing to 4.88 raises cruise RPM above the original stock figure rather than just matching it. That extra engine speed is the trade you make to get the torque back: the engine spins a bit faster at highway speed but no longer struggles to accelerate, climb, or hold a gear.

What are the symptoms that you need a regear?

Bigger tires do not damage anything by themselves, but the drivetrain will tell you it is unhappy. Watch for these signs, which get worse the taller and heavier the tire and the more weight you carry.

  • Lost torque off the line - the truck feels doughy and slow to build speed compared to before the tires.
  • Transmission hunting or gear surfing - the automatic constantly shifts up and down on rolling grades and cannot settle in top gear.
  • Frequent downshifting on hills and headwinds, with the engine dropping out of its powerband.
  • Worse fuel economy, because the engine works harder and spends more time at higher throttle and in lower gears.
  • Poor towing and hauling behavior - added trailer or bed weight on big tires exaggerates every one of the above.
  • Higher engine and transmission temperatures on long climbs from the extra load.

A regear does not fix your speedometer

On modern Tacomas the speedometer reads off the wheel-speed sensors, so it tracks tire diameter, not axle ratio. Bigger tires make the speedo read low, and a regear does not change that - plan to recalibrate for your new tire size separately.

Do you regear the front and rear, or just the rear?

Both. The front and rear differentials must always run the same ratio. On a part-time 4WD Tacoma the front and rear driveshafts are locked together in 4WD, so mismatched ratios would fight each other, bind the drivetrain, and can damage the transfer case, driveshafts, and gears. Regearing only one axle is not an option - budget for a matched front-and-rear set from the start.

Locker and traction hardware also has to be respected. Off-road Tacoma trims (TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter) come with a factory electronic rear locker that lives in the rear differential carrier; no Tacoma ships with a factory front locker, so a front locker is an aftermarket add. Aftermarket ring-and-pinion sets are made to work with the factory rear e-locker, but the exact ratio determines which carrier or gear the installer needs, so the kit has to be cut for your carrier and locker.

  • Confirm the ring-and-pinion set is rated for your axle and factory carrier/e-locker before ordering.
  • Some ratios cross a 'carrier break' and require a different carrier or a thick gear - your installer will know for your axle.
  • Keep front and rear ratios identical; never mix.
  • If you are also adding an aftermarket locker, install it during the regear to share the labor.

What else should you do at the same time as a regear?

Setting up ring-and-pinion gears is precision work - pinion depth, backlash, and bearing preload all have to be dialed in, and a bad setup whines or fails. Most owners pay a shop, and a professional front-and-rear regear typically runs about $2,500 to $4,000 including the gear sets, install kits, and labor. Since the axles are already apart, it is the natural time to knock out related work.

  • Fresh bearings, crush sleeve or solid spacer, seals, and diff gaskets as part of the install kit.
  • Install a rear or front locker now if it is on your list, since the carrier is already out.
  • Follow a break-in: gentle driving and heat cycles for the first ~500 miles, then change the gear oil to flush the break-in wear.
  • Recalibrate the speedometer for your new tire size (a separate step from the regear).
  • Do the regear alongside your lift and wheels so alignment and any driveline angle changes are handled once.
  • Use the right gear oil and confirm the diff breather is clear, especially if you wheel in water.

4th-gen owners: check availability first

The 4th-gen (2024+) axles are newer, so ring-and-pinion options, especially numerically high ratios, are still maturing and can be limited or pricey. Confirm a set exists for your exact axle and locker configuration before you commit to a tire size that assumes a regear.
