Short answer

The 2005-2015 Tacoma's sizes are a long-running community-documented pattern, not a verified per-year spec in our data: 215/70R15, 245/75R16, 265/70R16, 265/65R17, 265/60R18, and 255/45R18. 4 of them land within 0.14 in of each other around 30.5 in. Our model puts the stock ceiling at 30.6 in, 31.6 in on a level, and 33s at a 3-inch lift.

What tire sizes did the 2nd gen Tacoma come with?

The second generation covers 2005-2015 — eleven model years, and every one of them falls before our OEM fitment dataset begins in 2017. This page can therefore tell you which sizes belong to the generation, but not which trim or which year each one came on, because nothing in the repo records that mapping.

That distinction is worth being blunt about, because plenty of pages elsewhere are not. A 2005 base model and a 2014 off-road trim are nine model years and several packages apart, and the family below covers both without separating them. How big are the 2nd-gen factory sizes in inches?

Run the 6 second-gen sizes through the size parser and the family splits cleanly in two. 4 of them — 245/75R16, 265/70R16, 265/65R17, and 265/60R18 — land between 30.5 in and 30.6 in, a spread of only 0.14 in across three different wheel diameters. The other 2 sit far below: 215/70R15 at 26.9 in and 255/45R18 at 27.0 in.

The tight cluster is the interesting half. 245/75R16 on a 16-inch wheel, 265/70R16 on a 16-inch wheel, 265/65R17 on a 17-inch wheel, and 265/60R18 on a 18-inch wheel all arrive at essentially the same rolling height by trading sidewall for rim: sidewall falls from 7.3 in on the 16-inch entry to 6.3 in on the 18-inch one, and the wheel grows by just enough to cancel it out. Revolutions per mile barely move — 662 down to 659 — which is why swapping between them leaves the speedometer alone.

The two short entries are a different animal. At 27.0 in and below they sit roughly 3.4 in shorter than the truck cluster, and one of them pairs a 4.5 in sidewall with an 18-inch wheel. Fitting one in place of a cluster size would shorten the truck by more than three inches of rolling diameter and throw the speedometer out badly in the other direction.

What is the max tire size on a 2nd gen Tacoma?

The second-gen entry in our fitment matrix starts tight and stays modest. It defines 3 tiers and, like the first gen, has no 4-6 inch tier at all. Its top modeled size, 285/75R16 at about 32.8 in, is a 33 by name rather than by measured height — the matrix is explicit that the number on the box and the number on the tape do not match here.

Notice how little the leveling tier buys on this generation. The model moves the ceiling from 30.6 in to 31.6 in — one inch — and asks only that the mud flaps come off. The jump to the 3-inch tier is where the real work starts: the matrix names a cab mount chop for full articulation at that point, which is permanent metal work rather than a bolt-on part.

Offset moves these numbers before anything else does. Ask the estimator for the same 2nd-gen tier with an aggressive offset and it adds one line to the verdict: Negative offset / spacers add outer poke — expect more fender, liner, and full-lock rub.

The sizes the model puts beyond this generation's ladder are 33x10.5R17, 33x12.5R17, 255/80R17, 295/70R17, 285/75R17, 35x12.5R17, 275/70R18, and 285/70R18. Every one of them is at or above 33.0 in, against a top second-gen ceiling of 32.8 in. Fitting them is not impossible — people fabricate — but it sits outside anything this site's rule-set will model for you.

The practical upside of this generation is availability. 4 of its sizes — 245/75R16, 265/70R16, 265/65R17, and 265/60R18 — carry on into the dataset's own rows, appearing on 44 year-and-trim rows across 2017-2023, every one of them a 3rd gen Tacoma row. None of them reaches 2026: the fourth generation moved to a different size set entirely. A second-gen owner replacing like for like is still shopping a size a 2023 truck shipped on, which is not true of the generation before it.

Split the same catalogue by wheel diameter and the second generation's position becomes obvious: three of its four rim sizes are well covered, and only the 15-inch entry has nothing modern behind it. That is the practical difference between this generation and the one before it — a second-gen on its factory wheels is shopping a live catalogue, not a legacy one.

What does a size change do to a 2nd-gen speedometer?

Four of the six sizes above share a rolling height, so this is the one Tacoma generation where a factory-size swap barely touches the instruments. The table runs every family size and every modeled ceiling against 265/70R16 to show how little moves — and where that stops being true.

Every 2nd-gen factory size plus each modeled ceiling from the ladder above, measured against the tallest size in the 2005-2015 family — 265/70R16 at 30.6 in. The last two columns are what a speedometer and odometer calibrated for that size get wrong on each of the others; the geometry is exact, the calibration assumption is the model.

Inside the truck cluster the error never leaves a few tenths of a percent, which is inside the tolerance of the gauge itself: those four sizes are genuinely interchangeable as far as the instruments are concerned. Step outside it and the picture changes twice over. The two short entries land 11.7% and more below the baseline, and the 285/75R16 at the top of the ladder sits 7.3% above it. Either of those moves is worth correcting for; swapping between the four cluster sizes is not.

2nd gen Tacoma fitment quirks the data actually shows

These are the things the repo's own data says about the second generation. Each one is checkable against the tables above rather than borrowed from forum lore.

  • Wheel diameters in the family run 15 in, 16 in, 17 in, and 18 in — the first Tacoma generation here to reach 17- and 18-inch wheels, and the last to still list a 15.
  • 4 of these sizes (245/75R16, 265/70R16, 265/65R17, and 265/60R18) appear again, unchanged, in the third-generation family and on 44 of our 2017-2023 trim rows. The size set survived the 2016 generation change intact even though the truck did not — and then did not survive the 2024 one.
  • The family holds two size philosophies at once: a 4-size truck cluster around 30.5 in and 2 short low-sidewall entries roughly three inches below it. No later Tacoma generation in this repo mixes the two.
  • 3 of the 4 truck-cluster sizes share an identical 10.4 in section width. Across the whole family width spans 8.5 in to 10.4 in — a 2.0 in range, against 3.8 in of height.
  • Nothing in the repo attaches any of these sizes to a 2005-2015 model year, trim, cab, or drivetrain, so no page here will tell you what a specific 2011 Tacoma left the factory wearing. Four of them do appear on later rows — that is the 2017-2023 data, not this generation's.
