For real winter, buy a three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) tire and go narrower if you can. The strongest snow scores in our 50-tire research set - 9 of 10 - belong to the BFGoodrich KO3, Falken Wildpeak A/T4W, Toyo Open Country A/T III, Yokohama Geolandar A/T4, and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT. Mud-terrains score worst; dedicated winter tires still beat all of them on ice.

Which Tacoma tires score best for snow?

Our Tacoma research set covers 50 tires, each rated on ten axes from 0 to 10. The snow axis separates the field sharply: five tires top out at 9, twenty-two sit at 8, and the bottom is almost entirely mud-terrain. Nothing in the set is a dedicated winter tire, so read this as a ranking of year-round tires by winter competence.

The pattern behind the numbers is worth more than the ordering. Every tire scoring 8 or higher on snow in this set carries the 3PMSF stamp, and every tire scoring 5 or lower carries only M+S. That is not a coincidence in the data - it is the categories separating. Of the 18 all-terrains in the set, 16 are 3PMSF-rated and their median snow score is 8. Of the nine mud-terrains, the median snow score is 3 and none carries a full-line 3PMSF rating - the one partial exception, the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T, is 3PMSF in select sizes only.

What is the difference between 3PMSF and M+S?

These two sidewall markings look like they belong on the same scale. They do not. M+S (mud and snow, sometimes written M/S or M&S) is a tread-geometry designation: a tire qualifies by having a certain proportion of open void and a certain block arrangement. No traction test is involved, and the manufacturer applies it. Almost every light-truck all-season and all-terrain tire carries M+S, including tires that are genuinely poor in snow.

The three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) is earned. A tire wearing it passed a standardized snow-traction test against a reference tire on medium-packed snow - a real, measured threshold, which is why it is the marking worth shopping on. What it is not is an ice rating: the test measures snow acceleration traction, not braking, not cornering, and not ice. A 3PMSF all-terrain and a studless winter tire can both wear the symbol and behave very differently on a glazed on-ramp.

Read the sidewall, not the marketing

M+S on its own tells you nothing about winter performance. 3PMSF tells you the tire cleared a snow-traction test. In our research set, 27 of the 50 tires carry 3PMSF, 22 carry only M+S, and one is 3PMSF in some sizes and not others - so check the specific size you are buying, not just the model name.

3PMSF all-terrain or dedicated winter tires?

This is the real decision, and the honest answer depends on ice more than snow. A good 3PMSF all-terrain handles snow-covered roads well, and it does it in July too, which is the whole appeal: one set, no swap, no second wheels, no storage. A dedicated winter tire uses a softer compound that stays pliable in cold air and a far denser siping pattern that bites glare ice. Neither of those advantages shows up on a dry 80-degree highway - they show up when the road is polished and near freezing.

  • Pick a 3PMSF all-terrain if winter means intermittent snow, plowed roads, and occasional passes, and you want one tire for the year. This is the right call for most Tacoma owners.
  • Pick dedicated winter tires if you routinely drive on ice, unplowed roads, or steep grades in sustained cold. An all-terrain does not close that gap.
  • A second set on steel or takeoff wheels makes the swap painless and keeps your good wheels out of the salt. Budget for a TPMS relearn if the winter set carries its own sensors.
  • Studs go further on ice and are regulated by state and province - confirm local rules and dates first.
  • Four-wheel drive helps you accelerate and does nothing for stopping or turning. Tires do both of those jobs alone.

Mud-terrains are the wrong tool for winter

In our set, mud-terrains score 2 to 6 on snow with a median of 3, and only the Baja Boss M/T carries 3PMSF - in select sizes only. The large voids that clear mud pack with snow instead of shedding it, and the stiff, blocky tread has little siping to grip ice. An aggressive tire is not a winter tire.

Does a narrower tire actually help in snow?

Yes, and the reasoning is geometric rather than mystical. A truck's weight is fixed. Spread it over a wider contact patch and the pressure at each square inch drops, so the tire tends to ride up on top of loose snow. Concentrate the same weight on a narrower patch and the tire cuts down through it toward the firmer surface underneath, where the grip actually is. A narrower tire also has less snow to shove out of its way, which is why the same truck often feels more confident on a skinny tire than a wide one in deep going.

The size catalog behind our fitment tools makes the tradeoff concrete. A 245/70R17 is about 9.6 inches of nominal section width at roughly 30.5 inches tall. A 265/70R17 is about 10.4 inches wide at 31.6 inches tall. A 285/70R17 is about 11.2 inches wide at 32.7 inches tall. Going from a 285 to a 245 gives up about 1.6 inches of width - a meaningful change in ground pressure at the same truck weight.

Availability is the catch. In our set the 255/80R17 is listed by the entire top of the snow table - the KO3, Wildpeak A/T4W, Open Country A/T III, Geolandar A/T4, and DuraTrac RT. The narrower 245-class sizes are served by the milder end instead: the Firestone Destination A/T2, Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT, Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse AT/AT2, Kumho Road Venture AT52, and Sumitomo Encounter AT2 all list 245/70R17 or 245/75R16, and all five score 8 on snow.

Confirm the size on the truck, not from a chart

Factory sizes vary by year, trim, and package, and going narrower than stock changes speedometer reading and effective gearing too. Check the driver's door placard or the tire sidewall for what your truck actually wears, then run the before-and-after through the tire calculator.

How does cold weather change your tire pressure?

Cool a sealed tire and its pressure falls. The figure our pressure calculator uses is about 2 percent per 10 degrees Fahrenheit - near 1 psi per 10 degrees on a tire around 35 psi. That is why the TPMS light appears on the first genuinely cold morning. Nothing leaked; the pressure you set in mild weather is simply no longer there.

  • A 40-degree drop from a mild afternoon to a hard freeze pulls roughly 3 psi out of a tire set near 35 psi, entirely from temperature.
  • Set pressure cold - before driving - because rolling heats a tire and inflates the reading.
  • Check monthly through the winter rather than once in the fall. Each cold snap moves the number again.
  • Deliberately running low for snow is counterproductive on pavement: it flattens the contact patch, the opposite of the ground pressure you want.
  • Airing down for deep snow is a temporary trail move, not a highway setting. Air back up before you return to pavement.

Where the number itself comes from is a separate question with one honest answer: the placard on the driver's door jamb, adjusted for load using the tire manufacturer's load-and-inflation table. How should you pick a winter-capable tire for your Tacoma?

Work down from the constraint that binds you rather than up from a favorite brand: how bad is your winter, how narrow can you go, and what capability are you unwilling to give up.

  1. Decide whether ice is part of your winter. If it is, plan on a dedicated winter set. If it is snow and slush on maintained roads, a 3PMSF all-terrain is the better value.
  2. Set your size before you set your model. Narrower helps in snow, and the size you choose eliminates most of the catalog before you ever compare treads.
  3. Filter to 3PMSF in that size. The stamp can vary by size within a model line, so confirm it for the exact size code you are buying.
  4. Then rank on the other axes. Among the top snow scorers, the KO3 and DuraTrac RT lean toughness, the Wildpeak A/T4W and Geolandar A/T4 lean value, and the Open Country A/T III leans treadlife.
  5. Set pressure from the placard once mounted, and correct it at the season's first cold snap.
