Towing and Payload: Tacoma Tire Requirements
Short answer
When you tow, the number that matters is load index, not load range. Meet or beat the placard index - the Tacoma is engineered for 109 or higher, 2,271 lb per tire. P-metric tires are derated about 10 percent on a truck; LT tires are not. Load range C covers most Tacoma towing.
What does towing actually demand from a tire?
Three separate things, and buyers usually think about only the first. A trailer adds weight, so the tire has to carry more. A trailer adds tongue weight to the rear axle specifically, so the rear tires carry disproportionately more than the fronts. And a trailer adds a lever behind the rear axle that pushes the truck around, so the tire's sidewall has to resist squirm well enough that the truck tracks straight instead of wandering. Capacity, distribution, and stability - and only the first is printed on the sidewall.
That is why the towing tire question is not the off-road tire question, even though both point toward heavier construction. Off-road you want puncture and cut resistance. Towing you want rated capacity at the pressure you actually run, plus a sidewall stiff enough that the trailer does not steer the truck. The specification that answers the towing one is the load index.
The tires are not your tow rating
Nothing in this guide raises what your Tacoma is rated to tow or carry. Tow rating, GVWR, GAWR, and payload are vehicle limits set by Toyota and printed on your door placard and in your owner's manual. Tires can only fail to meet those limits or comfortably meet them - they never extend them. Look up your truck's actual numbers before you shop.
How do you turn a load index into actual pounds?
The load index is a coded number on the sidewall, right after the size, and it maps to a fixed capacity in the standardized table our load-index lookup uses. It is a lookup, not a formula. Load index 109 is 1,030 kg - 2,271 lb per tire. Multiply by four for the vehicle total, and remember no tire's capacity is available unless it is inflated to the pressure the table assumes.

Toyota engineers the Tacoma for tires with a load index of 109 or higher - 2,271 lb per tire. A 265/70R17 factory tire is roughly load index 115, or 2,679 lb. The gap between those two numbers is the margin the truck was designed with, and it is why dropping to a tire that only just clears 109 is legal but leaves you less headroom than you started with. If you tow, shop the load index the way you would shop a spring rate.
Load index and load range answer different questions
Load index is how many pounds one tire carries. Load range - SL, C, D, E - is how the casing is built and how much pressure it can hold. A high load range does not excuse a low load index, and plenty of SL and C tires meet the Tacoma's 109 minimum without going to E. Check both numbers; they are printed inches apart on the same sidewall.
Why does P-metric versus LT matter for payload?
Because a P-metric tire does not deliver its stamped capacity on a truck. P-metric (passenger) tires are rated against passenger-car service. Fit one to a light truck and the industry convention derates its capacity by dividing by about 1.10 - roughly a 10 percent haircut. LT (light truck) tires are rated for truck service from the start and take no such reduction. For payload purposes that is the whole difference, and it is invisible on the sidewall.
The arithmetic is worth seeing. A load-index-115 P-metric tire is stamped 2,679 lb but effectively provides about 2,435 lb on the Tacoma - across four tires, roughly 975 lb of stamped capacity that does not count. Toyota baked that derate into the factory size, so a stock truck is fine. It matters when you shop near your payload limit and compare a P-metric tire against an LT tire of similar index.
- P-metric: a size with no prefix or a leading P, such as 265/70R17 or P265/65R17. Passenger casing, SL or XL only, derated about 10 percent on a truck.
- LT: a size with a leading LT, such as LT265/70R17. Light-truck casing, load ranges C through E, no derate, higher pressure ceilings, and several pounds more weight per corner.
- Every factory fitment in our Tacoma dataset is a passenger-construction size - the 3rd-gen rows are written with the P prefix and the 4th-gen rows carry no LT prefix. No Tacoma trim in the data leaves the factory on an LT tire.
- Going LT is an upgrade you choose, not a correction of a factory shortfall. It buys capacity and casing strength at the cost of weight, ride, and a little fuel economy.
Load range C or E for towing with a Tacoma?
For most Tacoma towing, C. It is a light-truck casing with a 50 psi ceiling that carries real weight while riding far better than E when the trailer is unhooked - which, for most owners, is most of the time. Our load-range reference frames E as the choice once you tow at the heavy end, roughly 5,000 lb and up, or run a heavy overland build or rocky trails. E is a load answer, not a towing answer as such.

The trap is treating load range as a proxy for safety margin. A Load Range E tire whose load index is lower than your placard requires is still the wrong tire, and a standard-load tire that comfortably clears the placard index is a correct one. Buy the index first, then choose the range that suits how you use the truck the other six days a week.
What does the door placard tell you, and what does it not?
The placard on the driver's door jamb is the authority for four things: the factory tire size, the load index and speed rating Toyota specified, the cold inflation pressure for that tire at rated load, and the vehicle capacity weight - the combined occupants and cargo the truck is rated to carry. That last number is what most people mean by payload.
- It does tell you: the minimum load index to match, the OE size, the OE cold pressure, and the truck's capacity weight.
- It does not tell you: what pressure to run a different tire at. The placard pressure was computed for the factory P-metric tire, not for an LT tire with a different load curve.
- It does not tell you: your actual axle weights. Only a scale does that, and towing shifts them toward the rear.
- It does not change when you change tires. Fitting a higher-capacity tire does not raise GVWR, GAWR, or your tow rating.
The one-line rule for a tow rig
Match or beat the placard load index, keep the placard speed rating or better, and set pressure from the tire manufacturer's load-and-inflation table for your measured axle weights - not from the placard number copied onto a different tire, and not from the sidewall maximum.

The pattern is the point. The highway and mild all-terrain end of the field wins on exactly the axes towing rewards, and the aggressive end pays for its trail scores in comfort and efficiency. If your Tacoma tows more than it wheels, that trade is worth taking seriously - and if it does both, the 3PMSF all-terrains in the middle of that table are the compromise most owners land on.
